Background of the program
Midwives contribute tremendously in preventing these deaths and in ensuring the health and continuation of the human race all across the world. Quality midwifery services that are coordinated and integrated within communities and within the health system ensure that a continuum of essential care can be provided through out pregnancy, child birth and beyond. Midwifery services should ensure timely and appropriate referrals of mothers and newborns from home or health centre to the hospitals whenever they occur. Midwives are frontline workers that give care and support during pregnancy, labor and post -partum period benefiting not only the client and her immediate family but all members of the society and contributing to the country’s human and economic development. So most developed countries used the strategy to reduce the maternal and newborn mortality rate by producing qualified midwives in proportion to their population size. When we see the current total number of midwives in Ethiopia 4, 725 this few number is not sufficient to serve the population.
Even though Ethiopia is on the way of reduction the newborn mortality, the maternal mortality has yet poor progress. This main problem of the country can be reduced by producing the qualified and adequate number of midwives per total population of the country. In order to solve this problem, the government is on the way of producing midwives in most of the university allocated in the country. There is huge gap between trained midwifery human power and the increasing demand of the society. (current midwives to the total population it is estimated 4,725 midwives for a population of 85 million giving a ratio of 1: 17,989; even though WHO recommends a ratio of 1 midwife for a population of 5,000.), indeed it is the current central core issue of the Ethiopian government health policy targeted program. So that Human Resource for Health Strategy 2009-2020 (sometimes referred to as the “flooding” strategy) was developed in 2009 and has a target of training 8,635 midwives, by the year 2015. So in order to achieve this strategy, today, many midwifery schools are opened in various regions of Ethiopia and rendering midwifery training.
Midwifery B.Sc. program is originated in response to the need of country which is more community oriented, competent, gender sensitive and request of leaders in the health care system for graduate level in educational field. Focusing on the need of generic learners, the goal of the program is to provide a positive and supportive learning environment, preparing the professional midwives in the art and science of midwifery, meeting the social need for safe and competent midwives.
