Background of Debre Tabor University Physics Department

Physics, as one of the fundamental sciences, is concerned with the observation, understanding and prediction of natural phenomena and the behavior of man-made systems. It deals with profound questions about the nature of the universe and with some of the most important practical, environmental and technological issues of our time.
The scope of Physics is broad and encompasses mathematical and theoretical investigation, experimental observation, computing technique, technological application, material manipulation and information processing. Physics seeks simple explanations of physical phenomena based on universal principles stated in concise and powerful language of mathematics. The principles form a coherent unity, applicable to objects as diverse as DNA molecules, neutron stars, super-fluids, and liquid crystals. Findings in Physics have implications in all walks of life ranging from the way we perceive reality to gadgets of everyday use.

Physicists constantly test the basic laws of nature by probing the unknown, the mysterious and the complex.

They also search for new laws at the frontiers of knowledge, systematically seek novel properties of matter.
They are alert to the possibility of applying physical idea and processes to new situations, and often the realization of these possibilities has had revolutionary consequences. It is with the intention of producing such physicists for the country that nationally harmonized curriculum has been developed and implemented in 2009.

About the Department

The department of physics is one of the Departments in the faculty of Natural and Computational Science, Debere Tabore University. It was first launched as a full-fledged Department of physics in 2004 E.C offering a three-years B.Sc. program in physics. In 2005 E.C new modular and innovative curriculum approach has been established and the implementation began this year.
The department of physics under the faculty of Natural and computational Science has been imparting subject related knowledge and practical training not only to the students of three years graduate program but also to the students of many other disciplines and programs such as Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, and Math’s, etc. and the discipline works in close relations to each other. And also, physics is the base line for Transformation of Science and Technology as whole.
From its inception, the department runs only undergraduate programs in regular and summer programs.
On the past five years totally more than 70 students were graduated from our department in regular program. On top of that, the department is offering physics courses to other departments that demand service/supportive physics courses.
The department of physics has contributed its maximum effort in realizing the harmonized modular curriculum of the nation. To implement the nationwide harmonized curriculum, physics department of Debre Tabor University will make significant restructuring in semester loads and block courses at department level. The department also looks forward to having enough and well-furnished computer lab and science laboratory for practical courses with appropriate materials to produce skilled man power in physics.
The harmonized curriculum was developed based on needs assessment, and it was designed to comprise only the science field with the intention that students who want to be qualified teachers can further study for professional certificates after having BSc degree in Physics.
Potential research thematic areas and community service issues in physics
Research thematic areas and community service issues are developed to meet the social needs, to solve the problem of the society, catalyze the delivery of policy directions of the country and facilitate the discovery of new knowledge and technology
As we know physics is a branch of science that seeks laws, principle, rules and formulas which govern natural phenomenon. Here we have identified basic problems to be searched and solved in the coming five years.
