Historical Background Of College of Health and Medical Sciences

Pursuant to the national health policy, long term plan of the government and mandate given to the Higher education Institutions to train competent professions for the development of the country the faculty of Health Sciences was established in September 2017. Currently the faculty has renamed as College of Health and Medical Sciences.

The college started by offering BSc degree in Nursing and Midwifery which is bedrock of a College of Health and Medical Sciences (CHMS). Since then, The College had been launched five departments consecutively, namely Departments Nursing and midwifery, medical laboratory Science, Environmental Health Sciences, and BSc pharmacy,

Currently the college has playing a crucial role in graduating competent health workforce that actively engage in diseases prevention and treatment, educational programs (capacity building), policies development, services administration, research, and regulatory services locally and internationally. The College has history of bringing new insights and innovative solutions to community health problems. Consequently, community engagements in the form of learning, clinical services and Community Health Practice are among critical interaction points for members of the community and students.

In addition to its human resource capacity development effort, the college has shown a tremendous progress in its research and community service engagement, and output. In this regard, the academic staff members are addressing a number of health problems deserving research attention. These include, among others, epidemiology of infectious and non-infections diseases, reproductive health issues, human nutrition, and prevalence of different diseases, disease control approaches and strategies, and others.

The general objectives of CHMS are:

To train Compassionate, caring and community oriented health professionals for Ethiopia with international recognized standard of excellence
To conduct research activities in the area of community health based on the existing problems and felt need of the society
To facilitate and assist in the transfer and adaptation of knowledge, attitude and skill

Message From The College Dean

Dear all University communities and fellows; Bule Hora University, College of health and Medical Science was newly founded young Faculty, in 2017. Since then; it had a duty to address the National issue of education, research and community service. The College was designed to produce compassionate, respective and skillful health professional and enabling them to solve any health and health related problem that may affects individual’s life. This may help to address National health policy and millennium development goals (MDG).

It was obvious that Ethiopia has witnessed considerable expansion in health care services in the last decade with massive scale up of health infrastructure, health workforce development, increasing responsiveness of health professionals to the client needs and improved access to medical equipment and essential supplies among others. Following this there are significant improvements in many health indicators. However the human resources development and management challenges still exist despite significant strides made in the last few years. Health work force density (health professionals to population ratio) was very low compared to other sub-Saharan Africa. In order to address the challenges our College will plan to launch different departments and programs and aimed produce large number of health professional to improve health work force density.

The major objective of our College was becoming the center of excellence in producing nationally recognized skillful Health professionals. The College was affiliated with different Health professionals to address the National issue of education, research and community service. In addition to this, we assign Medical doctors and Nurses at University Clinic and Bule Hora General Hospital to provide health care services.

At the near future we plan to switch Bule Hora General Hospital under our University to expand Health care service and affiliated the hospital with different specialist and occupied with advanced Medical equipments. This may solve many challenges of the community to seek advanced health services in other areas.

Finally I would like to express my deepest appreciation to all stake holders that helps in launching and shaping the College to address its objective in all way round.
