There are three undergraduate and five postgraduate programs running under the Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

Mechanical Engineering

Vision

To be the center of excellence in technological education research, innovation and remain a source of pride for all Ethiopian’s.

Mission

To prepare knowledgeable, skilled and matured in engineering and technology through undergraduate and graduate studies;

To produce problem-solving research outputs by promoting and enhancing researches focusing on knowledge and technology transfer consistent with the country’s priority needs;

To strengthen and increase technological based services and supports that respond to the developmental needs of the nation through consultancy and community services.

Program Delivery Modes

The mechanical engineering program is a full time based on-campus mode program offered during the day time via lecture, tutorial, and laboratory. Aside the traditional way of course delivery students will take a one semester intensive internship at different factories at a national level.

Program Educational Objectives (PEO)

PEO1: Graduates will apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.

PEO2: Graduate will identify, formulate, conduct research and analyze complex engineering problems reaching to a substantial conclusion using principles of mathematics and engineering science.

PEO3: Graduates will function effectively as an individual and as a member or leader in diverse teams and in multi-disciplinary settings.

PEO4: Graduates will recognize the need for and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change.

PEO5: Graduates communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and society.

Student outcomes:

An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics

An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors

What is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical engineers design, manufacture, and operate systems that extend our physical abilities. A mechanical engineer’s work is seen every day in anything that moves. This includes designing an aircraft, planning a building’s ventilation system and improving a car’s fuel economy. Mechanical engineering also saves lives through bioengineering technologies. The world’s first artificial heart was partially designed, manufactured and implanted using mechanical engineering principles.

As a mechanical engineer, you are an innovator. You’re interested in the physical principles involved in a product’s design, its manufacture and assembly, its safe operation and final disposal. You must also consider appearance and ease of use, the costs of design, manufacture, operation, and effects on the environment of your product. Robotics, automation for manufacturing, environmentally responsible power generation or any form of transportation are just some of the areas where your product can be used. In fact, it would be hard to find an area or object in everyday life that is not in some way affected by a mechanical engineer.

Industrial Engineering

What is Industrial Engineering?
Industrial Engineers are interested in people and how they interact with technology.

All industrial engineers share the common goal of increasing an organization’s efficiency, profitability, and safety in a variety of areas – manufacturing, retail, health care, finance, information technology, transportation, energy and consulting.

With Industrial Engineering, you will engineer complex systems. By system, we mean any organization and/or business process in which people, materials, information, equipment, processes and/or energy interact in an integrated fashion. By engineering we mean the analysis, design, installation, control, evaluation, and improvement of systems, in a manner that protects the integrity and health of the human, social, and natural ecologies.

Should You Become an Industrial Engineer?

Automotive Engineering

Automobile Engineering is a branch study of engineering which teaches manufacturing, designing, mechanical mechanisms as well as operations of automobiles. It is an introduction to vehicle engineering which deals with motorcycles, cars, buses, trucks, etc. It includes branch study of mechanical, electronic, software and safety elements.

The objective of this program is to provide the student with adequate knowledge and skill of basic Automotive engineering concepts, working principles related to design, manufacturing, service and maintenance. In addition, understand and implement the procedure for pollution control, legal aspects such as automotive act, fleet management, insurance, registration of vehicles under different State body control, emission standards

Should You Become an automotive Engineer?

Here are some typical qualities of our automotive engineering students:

Enjoy physics and math.

Have critical thinking ability sufficient for diagnosis of automotive failures.

Interpersonal abilities sufficient to interact with customers, supervisors, and fellow employees from a variety of social, emotional, cultural and intellectual backgrounds.

Have good communication abilities sufficient for effective interaction with others in spoken and written English.

Remain continuously on task for several hours while standing, sitting, moving, lifting, bending and/or working in awkward positions.

Able to focus and concentrate on diagnostic, repair, and maintenance tasks requiring electrical and mechanical skills.
