The Adult Education and Community Development (AECD) Department, College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, Bahir Dar University, is a pioneer in Ethiopia in training adult education professionals and community development practitioners. The evolution of the department dates back to the establishment of Bahir Dar University. Bahir Dar University (BDU) was formed in 2000 as a result of the unification of two higher education institutions – Bahir Dar Polytechnic Institute and Bahir Dar Teachers College. The Bahir Dar Teachers College was established in 1972 as Bahir Dar Academy of Pedagogy by the tripartite agreement of the Government of Ethiopia, UNESCO, and UNDP. Educating community development workers and adult education organizers were among the objectives of the Academy of Pedagogy. Although it was the only institute to train adult education and community development experts in the country, the adult education programme was terminated in 1997, while all other diploma programmes were upgraded to Bachelor level. After decade-long termination,adult education and community development came into the picture, at Bachelor level (being offered in regular and summer modalities). The department has alsolaunched an MA programme in Adult Education and Community Development (Regular, Summer and Extension modalities).
The department envisions becoming a center of excellence in Adult Education and Community Development. The department has the following missions:

Contributing to qualified personnel in the area of adult education and community development;
Conducting problem-solving research;
Provide need-based community services and thereby contribute to the development endeavors of the country.
The department has been recording many successes. For instance, about more than 500 students were graduated with BA degrees. Several researches have also been conducted in the area of AECD and have been published. In addition, the staff of the department has supported Bahir Dar City Administration to achieve the UNESCO Learning City Award (2015) and through the efforts made by the staff of the department and the City Administration, Bahir Dar City is registered as a member of the Global Network of Learning Cities. For the last several years, the department has also been providing short term training for adult literacy facilitators as part of community service. The department is also currently collaborating with UNESCO Chair for Adult Literacy and Learning for Social Transformation (led by Professor Anna Robinson-Pant), University of East Anglia, UK (see https://www.uea.ac.uk/education/research/areas/literacy-and-development/unesco-chair/unesco-news).

In the future years, the department aims to strengthen capacity development trainings for the staff; establish a PhD programme to respond to the national human power needs and development;diversify BA and MA programmes; establish model community learning centres (CLCs) in Bahir Dar; collaboratively conduct and publish research works that can impact on the national AECD policy and practice; strengthen collaborative works to access up-to-date books and journals, and contribute to capacity development for adult literacy facilitators.
The department collaboratively works with the Ministry of Education; Bahir Dar City Administration; Amhara Regional Education Bureau; DVV International, UNESCO, ANFEAE (Adult and Non-Formal Education Association in Ethiopia) and Facilitator for Change (a local NGO).

With regard to staff profile, the department currently has three assistant professors, four lecturers, one assistant lecturer and four assistant graduates (6 female and 6 male).

BA in AECD	Regular	3	Students with the following background will be admitted to the programme based on the requirements set by Ministry of Education and the University. · Diploma holders in various fields (Teachers, Development Agents, Health Extension Workers and from related areas) who want to pursue their education in the field;and · Students who completed preparatory programs and scored grades required for joining degree programs based on the rules and regulations of MoE.	The candidates are expected to successfully accomplish 180 CPs. The candidate is required to obtain: i. CGPA of at least 2.00 at graduation. ii. Major CGPA of at least 2.00 at graduation. iii. No “F” grade in any module (course).

MA in AECD	Regular	2	The program shall be open to all applicants regardless of their academic specialization. Relevance of educational background of applicants, their academic performance as displayed in their credentials and entrance exam results will be considered to select applicants. Female applicants are encouraged. If it is found necessary, applicants coming from unrelated educational background will take preparatory courses with undergraduate students. The Admission is subject to the approval of the CGS (Council of Graduate Studies) and the University legislation. Besides, admission to this program is based on an entrance exam. Good performance in an entrance examination administered as part of screening process. Applicants may be organization-sponsored or self-sponsored.	Required credit for the MA programme shall be total of 124 ECTS/CP (36 credit hours), 64 ECTS/CP (30 credit hours) course work and 60 ECTS/CP (6 credit hours) thesis work.
